Getting close to a youth on Facebook proved costly for this 19-year-old woman, who ended her life allegedly owing to the constant harassment from a man who was nagging her to be his girlfriend.

The victim, E Nishantini, was a second-year BCom student. Deputy commissioner of police (east) TG Krishnabhat said she died in the early hours of Saturday after consuming poison on Friday evening at her house in Jeevan Bima Nagar. Arul Das, 21, an apprentice with HAL, has been arrested for abetting the suicide with his constant pestering, harassment and reprimand over Nishantini becoming close to another youth, whose photo she had lately uploaded on her Facebook wall.

CS Mallikarjun, JB Nagar police inspector, told dna that Arul had been nagging Nishantini for the past few months . He had also demanded that she get married to him. But, she had rejected his proposals.

Recently, Arul discovered that Nishantini had become close to a man, whose picture she had uploaded on her Facebook wall. This angered Arul, who on Friday afternoon cornered her near her college and allegedly humiliated her in full public view, asking her why she would not fall in love with him or marry him.

Mallikarjun said the extreme humiliation that Nishantini experienced at Arul's words might have led her to take her own life.

Nishantini, daughter of Elumalai, who works at a petrol pump station, and Shashikala, a D-group employee at Isro, was a student at St Ann's College in Ulsoor.

Her father found her unconscious when he returned from work on Friday evening. He rushed her to a nearby hospital, from where she was shifted to another hospital. She succumbed at 2.30 am.

The parents alleged that Nishantini killed herself owing to Arul's constant harassment, about which she had complained to her parents six months ago.

Nishantini and Arul knew each other for three years as both stayed in the same locality.

On learning about the harassment to their daughter, Elumalai and Shashikala visited Arul's house and had complained to his father, Sagairam. Following that, Sagairam had promised Nishantini's parents his son would not harass the girl any more. The harassment stopped, but only temporarily.

"We did not find any death note by the deceased. But, preliminary investigations reveals that she committed suicide over Arul's harassment. So, we have arrested him and further investigations are on," Mallikarjun said.

Arul was arrested by the JB Nagar police at 8.30am on Saturday.
